Fire near I-20 and I-26 sends thick smoke over busy South Carolina interstates

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Multiple fire departments responded to a large brush fire near one of the region’s busiest interstate intersections on Friday afternoon.

Irmo Fire stated that it worked alongside the Lexington Fire Service and the Columbia-Richland Fire Department when a fire reportedly began burning in a large woodpile near the intersection of I-20 and I-26, commonly referred to as Malfunction Junction.

The fire caused what Irmo Fire described as an “impressive plume” of smoke above commuters, and embers ignited another acre of land. The resulting fire slowed traffic in all directions, and fire officials warned drivers to be mindful of lane closures and delays in the area through 7 p.m…
