SC drops in ranks as premier fishing destination, but local captains say business is good

South Carolina fell out of the top ten fishing destinations in the United States, according to the rankings of a popular online angler advisor, but local captains say business continues to boom.

FishingBooker.com, a worldwide booking agency for travel fishing, released its third edition of annual state rankings — and South Carolina “has taken a noticeable hit” after earning an impressive fifth place in 2024, but dropping to 11th in 2025.

Fishing charter captains in Murrells Inlet are giving the drop in ranking a bit of an eye roll. Considering their daily battle against UV rays begins at 5 a.m. and the height of the season brings their days to a close when the sun meets the earth, they say online reviews and rankings are not an accurate measurement of their success…
