Proposed Law Would Require All Boaters To Wear Life Vests After Black Yacht Weekend Drowning

CITY HALL — Weeks after the drowning of 27-year-old stylist Zahrie Walls, Ald. Stephanie Coleman (16th) is pushing for a law that would require anyone boarding a boat to wear a life vest.

Coleman introduced the ordinance during Wednesday’s City Council session. The proposed law would apply to all boaters on all vessels, from sailboats to personal watercraft. Boaters found in violation could receive a fine of up to $500.
