Prisoner sentenced for robbery dies in Albany County jail

COLONIE — A middle-aged man who earlier this year admitted he brandished a butcher knife while trying to rob a drug store was found dead Friday evening in Albany County jail’s medical unit, according to a news release from Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple.

Ray Richardson, 57, was found unresponsive by a nurse and corrections officer around 9:38 p.m. He was later pronounced dead despite receiving in-house treatment and help from Colonie EMS.

Apple told the Times Union Richardson was being housed in the medical unit because he was “sickly to begin with.” The unit is staffed by nurses and doctors around the clock, according to the sheriff…
