Chaos erupted outside a Hollywood nightclub early Saturday morning after a driver plowed into a crowd, injuring at least 30 people. Seven of the victims are in critical condition.
The incident occurred outside The Vermont Hollywood. Police say the driver, identified as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, had been ejected from the club for disruptive behavior. After leaving the club, Ramirez allegedly drove his vehicle onto the sidewalk, striking numerous bystanders.
“From video footage, it appears he intentionally drove into the crowd,” LAPD Captain Ben Fernandes told the LA Times. Security personnel apprehended Ramirez and handcuffed him, but he was then assaulted by bystanders.
The situation escalated further when an individual, still unidentified, shot Ramirez in the back. Police later clarified the gunshot wound was to his buttocks.
Firefighters arriving at the scene described a chaotic scene. “The vehicle plowed through a taco stand, the valet podium, and then into the crowd waiting to enter the club,” said LAFD Captain Adam VanGerpen.
The injured, ranging in age from their mid-20s to early 30s, suffered a variety of injuries, including broken bones and soft tissue damage. At least one victim also sustained a gunshot wound.
They were transported to local trauma centers and hospitals. Seven others were treated at the scene and declined further transport.
Ramirez was taken into custody and is being treated for his injuries. He faces potential charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Police are still searching for the shooter, described as a male wearing a blue jersey. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued a statement expressing her sorrow over the incident and thanking the first responders. A full investigation is underway.
