Schools race to fill vacancies amid shortage and new requirements

COLUMBIA, S.C. — It’s crunch time for school districts across the state to finalize hirings amid a state-wide teacher shortage.

Under a new state law, called the Educator Assistance Act, districts are required to notify teachers of their assignment 14 days before the start of the school year. Those teachers can’t be reassigned unless the Superintendent can demonstrate a need for it, and the School Board has to be notified of all changes.

For example, districts that starts on August 4, like Lexington One, will now have to solidify teacher assignments by July 21…
