Rotating storm captured live on-air over Allendale

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The beginning stages of tornadic development were seen live as Storm Team 8 tracked strong rotation over Allendale Saturday evening.

A wall cloud became visible on the Grand Valley State University campus in Allendale around 4:45 p.m. as rotation strengthened on radar. Minutes later, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued, with the mention of a possible tornado.

Storm Team 8 was on the air as rotation intensified just east of the GVSU campus at around 5:00 p.m., with both rotation and upward motion seen during live coverage. Visible rotation and rising motion are both precursors to tornado development.

As of early evening, there have been no reports of a tornado touchdown or damage in the area. Rotation weakened shortly after 5:10 p.m…
