Jackson’s Global Fest educates kids on world cultures

JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson is home to people of many diverse backgrounds and cultures, and one event is looking to teach the younger generation about them.

Global Fest was held on Friday, July 18 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church’s Gym. This is the first year that this event was hosted. It featured many different cultures for these kids to learn about.

“When you look at Jackson, Jackson really has a growing international population,” said Shameka Reed, executive director of Global Gateways. “And we want to make sure that students know about different continents, about different countries and, you know, are very culturally aware, because their classrooms are very diverse and very cultured.”

Upon entering, kids would be given a “passport” to take notes with before entering the main area. Once in, the kids were taken down a path by a tour guide with a marker for every continent. Each marker would contain a QR code that the guide would scan to watch a video about the continent they’re on…
