Tropical disturbance fizzles, but afternoon storms fire up in southeast Texas

HOUSTON, Texas (KIAH) — The tropical disturbance we’ve been tracking in the Gulf all week is no more. As of Thursday night, the National Hurricane Center gave the system a 0% chance of development, and any lingering impacts have already moved out of the Houston area. The system brought about 1/2-3/4″ of rain to our eastern counties early Friday, but any threat of tropical organization is now behind us.

As that disturbance exits the picture, our attention shifts back to more familiar summertime instability. The heating of the day is triggering scattered thunderstorms this afternoon in southeastern Harris County. These storms are typical of the season and currently bringing downpours near Galveston Bay.
