20 is Plenty Officially Launches in Madison

The City of Madison is excited to share the updated progress for Phase 2 of the 20 is Plenty program, which began in the winter of 2024 under the Vision Zero Initiative. This second phase will expand the speed reduction initiative citywide, with neighborhood sign installations expected to be completed by August 2025.

The primary goal of the 20 is Plenty program is to increase safety for all road users by lowering the speed limit in residential neighborhoods from 25 mph to 20 mph. Focusing exclusively on local, residential streets, leaving major thoroughfares unaffected. The data-driven program first started in 2021 with Phase 1, which specifically targeted two local neighborhoods to trial how speed reductions can benefit safety in Madison neighborhoods.

To increase visibility and awareness of this local program, new speed limit signs have been strategically placed at the entrances of neighborhoods, ensuring they are noticeable as drivers transition from higher-speed roads to neighborhood streets. To reduce signing overuse, any additional signing will be placed sparingly through neighborhoods.
