Brighton woman with 17 years in the Army National Guard continues to serve her community

BRIGHTON, Colo. (KDVR) — Julie Rice has 17 years of service to her country under her belt, and a photo album showing all the highlights. From her role in going after a Panamanian dictator, to a two-week assignment in South Korea near the DMZ.

“Yeah, that was a little scary,” Rice said, thumbing through the pages of the photo album on Thursday.

She was active duty in the Army from 1982 to 1999, at a time when there weren’t a whole lot of female diesel mechanics wearing the uniform. So why did she do it?

“My mom told me I couldn’t. She said, ‘You’ll never make it in the Army. Your mouth’s too big.’ And I’m like, ‘I’ll show you,’” Rice said…
