Pierce County is preparing for a fun-filled day at the upcoming “Sunshine and Smiles” event, designed especially for families and young children. Set for August 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sprinker Recreation Center, the event promotes community connection and offers inclusive activities for kids of all abilities. Festivities will take place at both the Maple Shelter and the Alder Room, located at 1521 Military Rd. S. in Tacoma, as per the county’s official announcement.
The event, free to the public, extends a warm invitation to families with children from infancy to age five, placing a special focus on those interested in the Early Support for Infants and Toddlers (ESIT) program. ESIT is a beacon for families with young children facing developmental delays or disabilities, providing them with essential services, in a statement obtained by the Pierce County official website, Brayde Willson, the Developmental Disabilities supervisor expressed enthusiasm: “We’re thrilled to invite families of young children of all abilities to this event to build community and play together. Sprinker is a fun, welcoming space where kids can explore, create, and connect. It’s all about supporting healthy development while having a great time together.”
The ‘Sunshine and Smiles’ gathering will not be short on activities—with sensory play, water antics, bubble areas, art, and a segment dedicated to music and story time. In an exciting twist, children will navigate the event with a “passport,” collecting stamps at different stations to exchange for prizes like Play-Doh or bubbles. If it rains, the event will move indoors to the Alder Room…
