Man accused of killing parole agent in Oakland had dodged potential life sentence in recent plea deal

The 48-year-old Oakland man accused of shooting and killing a state parole agent Thursday afternoon, prompting a three-hour manhunt, was out on parole after serving time for assault with a deadly weapon and had a lengthy criminal history in Northern California spanning decades, according to court records.

Oakland police arrested Bryan Keith Hall in East Oakland roughly three miles from the Division of Adult Parole Operations office, where Hall, for reasons that remain unclear, allegedly shot Agent Joshua Lemont Byrd, a 40-year-old father and Navy veteran, around 12:50 p.m. as he worked in his office, authorities said.
