The Rhode Island state legislative session has come to an end and in its wake there’s a host of new laws and taxes that will affect residents and visitors to Rhode Island. Some laws are state-wide, and some impact select cities and towns, including Block Island. On July 7, Town Manager Amy Land updated the Town Council on just what passed in the General Assembly and what the potential impact to the town and its budget might be.
There were four pieces of legislation specific to Block Island and all of them have passed into law. The first was the increased landing fee that Interstate Navigation charges passengers for disembarking on the island. (They also collect a landing fee on behalf of the town of Narragansett.)
