Mayor Malik Evans on issues impacting Rochester, efforts to improve city

This week on In Focus, our JoDee Kenney sits down with Rochester Mayor Malik Evans.

Evans addressed several issues impacting the Flower City. He spoke about the challenging times and how many people don’t think it would impact local government, but it does. Evans says when bulk of your budget comes from sales tax and people are spending less, that provides less revenue to do those things that people need and you don’t want to raise people’s taxes.

Evans spoke about how Rochester planned how to use its ARPA money and not planning on it being a permanent fixture in the budget. Evans talked about Rochester’s plans to upgrade its 149-year-old water infrastructure. So far, 10,000 lead pipes have been removed. According to Evans, if you don’t invest in water projects now, you will pay the price later with multiple water main breaks and undrinkable water. After speaking about how gun violence has been declining in the city, Evans spoke about his love of Rochester. He says he takes every incident personally…
