New historic marker commemorates Brunswick County’s role in Revolutionary War

BRUNSWICK TOWN, N.C. (WECT) – A new historical marker unveiled this morning at Brunswick Town shines a light on a forgotten chapter in North Carolina’s fight for independence.

The Patriot Marker, placed by the Brunswick Town Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, commemorates the night of July 18, 1775, when more than 500 local patriots stormed and burned Fort Johnston.

The assault led by Robert Howe and John Ashe was one of the earliest armed uprisings against British authority in the colonies…
