Lowcountry group hosts autism awareness, advocacy event at Charleston library

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Dozens attended an autism awareness and advocacy event Sunday at the Charleston Public Library.

Just Bee, a nonprofit organization created to help make the world more welcoming and accepting of autistic and neurodivergent communities, hosted the event. The group provides training services to police departments, businesses, governments and community members.

Layla Luna created the organization after her autistic son, Rio, started to have sensory overload while waiting for a table at a restaurant. As some customers became irritated, the restaurant asked her and her family to leave. As she wiped her tears away with her daughter’s bee blanket, this prompted her to ask why can’t people just “bee nice?”…
