Dangerous heat for coastal South Carolina, low storm chance

The dangerous heat continues across parts of South Carolina. On Sunday, the coast is expected to experience heat indices of at least 110°F between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

A high-pressure system in the middle levels of the atmosphere is responsible for bringing heat to the Palmetto State this weekend and into early next week. This high will shift over the Gulf, allowing the entrance of a weak cold front late Monday, which promises to lower temperatures by a few degrees but also increase the chance for showers and storms across the state between Monday night and Tuesday.

Please don’t underestimate this heat.

Before the relief from the heat, highs will be in the mid-to-upper 90s, but with the humidity, the afternoon could feel as high as 115°F in some locations, especially in the Lowcountry. The Pee Dee could have heat indices near 110°F. Remember, specific criteria trigger heat advisories, and although the requirements may not be met, the heat will still be present and could be dangerous. For example, the National Weather Service in Columbia, which focuses on the Midlands, issues a heat advisory when the heat index is expected to reach 108°F to 112°F for at least 2 hours. For other areas like the Upstate and the Pee Dee, heat advisories are issued by their corresponding NWS offices when the heat indices are greater than 105°F for two hours.

It is recommended that people avoid outdoor activities between the peak hours of the day, which are between noon and 6 p.m. People with special conditions, as well as the elderly and kids, are often more prone to heat-related illnesses. If you suffer from cardiovascular diseases, it is recommended that you stay indoors under air conditioning. Stay hydrated throughout the day. Do not wait until you’re thirsty to drink water…
