Heat and humidity build by midweek

High pressure ridging across the Central United States will build Monday through mid-week, resulting in a multi-day stretch of well above average temperatures and sweltering humidity across Southeastern Minnesota and Northern Iowa.

Temperatures remain seasonable Monday, with high temperatures in the upper 70F’s-lower 80F’s, and dew points in the 60F’s. Southeasterly winds begin to increase Monday afternoon as warm air transport northward intensifies across the region. Overnight lows Monday night into early Tuesday morning will only drop to near 70F, thanks to these southerly winds.

Dew points will begin to spike across the area as well, especially later in the day Monday, into Tuesday. Many locations could see dew points climb to near 70F by the end of the day Monday.

Oppressive humidity and heat arrive Tuesday as ridging continues building to the south. High temperatures climb into the upper 80F’s-lower 90F’s, with dew points climbing well into the 70F’s. Warming continues into Wednesday, with highs area-wide reaching into the low 90F’s, and dew points in the mid-upper 70F’s!

Heat index values Tuesday are expected to climb into the mid-upper 90F’s, then into the low 100F’s Wednesday, especially if there is more sunshine. The potential is there for a heat advisory during this period, due to heat indices potentially topping 100F.

A cold front swings through the region Thursday, knocking high temperatures down into the low-mid 80F’s, but dew points remain in the 70F’s. Any relief behind this cold front will likely not last long, with continued ridging to the south through next weekend. This could very well allow for continued southerly flow into early next week.

High temperatures are anticipated to remain well into the 80F’s through the weekend, with dew points remaining near 70F…
