Have any plans to catch a show at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor? You may want to double-check where you’re buying your tickets from. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is sounding an alarm on a shady new resale scam that has been duping people out of hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars, on tickets.
The Scam Hitting Michigan
A foreign company has set up a fake website that looks just official enough to fool people into thinking they are buying directly from the venue, but instead of the tickets being legit, customers unknowingly are rerouted to a resale site that has insanely high ticket prices. One buyer has even paid over $1,200 for tickets that should’ve cost $175.
At this time, the AG office is investigating the overseas reseller for deception practices, including creating fake websites that impersonate a real venue and tacking outrageous markups. This could be connected to other venues here in Michigan as well, but it has yet to be determined at this time.
The Action Being Taken
Nessel said enough is enough, and will be taking legal action against the scammers. Her team is putting out a reminder on how to keep yourself safe when buying tickets online.
Things To Look For
- Only buy from official venue sites
- Look out for weird website names or pages
- Always use a credit card, in case you need to dispute a charge
- Don’t trust a site unless it’s a secure connection (https)
