Driver identified, charged in relation to police chase, Embassy Suites crash

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Police Department has released the name of the driver who led police on a chase and crashed into the Embassy Suites on Wednesday.

The incident began around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday when several 911 callers reported a person attempting to assault pedestrians in the 600 block of Robert D Ray Drive. Callers reported the man had chased people both on foot and in a vehicle.

DMPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle near East Grand Avenue and Robert D Ray Drive, at which point the driver appeared to intentionally hit a police car before speeding away, authorities say. The driver ignored traffic signals and eventually crashed into the Embassy Suites located at 101 East Locust.

The driver was taken into custody at the scene and later transported to a local hospital with injuries. No other injuries have been reported.
