This Week in History: the remnants of Hurricane Danny

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) – The remnants of Hurricane Danny left significant damage across parts of the Midlands from July 23-24 in 1997.

Danny made landfall in two separate locations along the northern Gulf Coastline. It first made landfall near Empire and Buras, Louisiana on July 18, 1997 with maximum sustained winds of 75 MPH. After making its first landfall, it emerged back over the waters of the Gulf where it started to slightly strengthen. Winds climbed to 80 MPH as the center of circulation sat 40 miles south of Mississippi and Alabama border. Danny then made its second landfall on July 19, 1997 in Fort Morgan, Alabama with 80 MPH maximum sustained winds. Danny weakened to a tropical depression quickly as it tracked inland over…..
