Iowa DNR recommends avoiding swimming at a dozen state beaches due to E. coli concern

IOWA, USA — Iowans may want to think twice before jumping into a lake this summer. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is recommending people avoid swimming at over a quarter of Iowa’s 40 state beaches. That includes the following sites:

The Iowa DNR issued the recommendation on Friday because all 12 sites are under an E. coli advisory.

Daniel Kendall, environmental specialist senior with the Iowa DNR, said it’s pretty common for E. coli levels to spike at beaches around this time of year. They usually go up in the second half of the summer when the weather gets warmer…
