‘A highly trained best friend,’ Roanoke County Sheriff’s Office welcomes new mental health focused furry friend

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va (WFXR) — There’s a new deputy sheriff in the Roanoke County Sheriff’s Department, one with four legs. Deputy Sheriff K-9 Liberty, or better known as Libby, a reduced golden doodle, is here to help the department with their mental health.

According to a study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 30% of first responders deal with mental health issues, compared to 20% of the general population.

“I think the science is day-to-day proven, you know?” Deputy Sheriff Ethan Sweeney, Liberty’s handler, said, “When we run across somebody that clearly is having a tough day, it’s a complete 180. As soon as they come in, kiss your face, a terrible day is instantly better, and she will kiss your face, way too much.”…
