Violent crash on remote Lake County road leaves one dead

A 45-year-old Middletown man was killed Sunday evening when he was ejected from a pickup truck that rolled multiple times along a remote dirt road outside of town, according to a press release from the California Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred around 6:58 p.m. on Big Canyon Road, north of Harbin Springs Road. CHP investigators say the driver, 44-year-old Steven Wilhite of Calistoga, was behind the wheel of a Dodge truck when he lost control at high speed, sending the vehicle tumbling off the gravel roadway.

The front-seat passenger, Samrat Kakkari of Middletown, was thrown from the truck during the rollover and was fatally injured when the vehicle landed on him. South County Fire personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Kakkari was pronounced dead at the scene…
