Male Mexican gray wolf tracked outside of designated area

SANTA FE, N.M. — The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish recently tracked a male Mexican wolf crossing out of an experimental population area.

The wolf crossed out of the I-40 boundary west of Albuquerque late last week. The wolf has a collar with radio transmission to help track it. New Mexico wildlife officials say his last location was near Mount Taylor. They are working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to monitor the wolf’s movements beyond that.

Mexican wolves outside of the area, including north of I-40, are classified as an endangered species. It is illegal to haze or harass them unless they’re threatening a person…
