More information released about Polk County crash that injured 5

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — More information has been released about a crash over the weekend that injured five people in Polk County.

On Sunday morning deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of NW 112th Street and Highway 163, also known as East University Avenue, just south of Mitchellville. When first responders arrived at the intersection, they found one vehicle on its top submerged in water and the other in the median.

According to an Iowa State Patrol crash report released Monday night, a 2019 Honda Insight was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection when it pulled out in front of a 2014 Buick Enclave. The collision sent the Honda Insight rolling down an embankment until it stopped, submerged in water. The Buick Enclave spun out and crashed into the median of Highway 163.

The driver of the Honda Insight, and only occupant, was rescued from the submerged vehicle and was life flighted to a local hospital in stable condition, the sheriff’s office said. The occupants of the Buick Enclave, two adults and two juveniles, were transported to a nearby hospital via ground ambulance for treatment of minor injuries…
