Heatstroke and hardship plague Lincoln’s homeless population

Lincoln, NE — As summer temperatures soar, many residents in Lincoln can retreat to air-conditioned homes, but for the city’s homeless population, relief is harder to find. Erika Thomas announced that the Lincoln Police Department and CenterPointe will be engaging with the unsheltered homeless community this week.

“Whether it be bottled water, bug spray, sunscreen, telling them about the resources in our community available if they’d like to get into air conditioning for a bit,” said Thomas, emphasizing the importance of outreach to prevent medical emergencies by knowing where those in need are located.

The Lincoln Police Department stated that all non-emergency calls related to the homeless will be redirected to CenterPointe. “It gives CenterPointe a chance to go out there and make contact with them and then we can keep our emergency resources for those call for service that need police, fire or EMS presence,” they said…
