2 arrested in alleged $21,000 North Charleston scam

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The North Charleston Police Department has charged two suspects in connection with an alleged gambling scam that cost a man over $20,000.

James Darr, 25, and Valva Kennedy, 51, were both charged with swindling.

Police said a victim was lured into a bingo-style game at a ‘customer appreciation’ tent near a gas station on Ashley Phophate Road on Jan. 26.

He was told that for $20, he could win up to $250 after being given three free attempts. The buy-ins eventually reached up to $1,280 with a promise of a $35,000 jackpot. The victim told police he was pressured to continue playing, believing he was bound to win, but ultimately lost $21,000…
