Local sheriff issues new phone scam warning

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – Montgomery County Sheriff Rob Streck has issued a warning for a phone scam in which fraudsters impersonate law enforcement and spoof phone numbers associated with the sheriff’s office.

Scammers will try to falsely convince the person they’re calling that they’ve missed a court appearance, ignored a subpoena, or have an active warrant for their arrest. They might also insist that a loved one is in jail and needs immediate bail money.

The scammers cite false charges. They often claim a bond must be paid immediately to avoid further legal trouble. They will pressure the person to make payments through platforms like PayPal, Apple Pay, wire transfers, cyrptocurancy or by debit cards…
