Taft student recognized as 2025 Texas Student Hero

A local student from San Patricio County recently earned a highly prestigious honor from the Texas State Board of Education in honor of his dedication to his school and community.

On July 16, the State Board of Education (SBOE) announced its 2025 Student Heroes, which included 15 students from school districts around the state. And among students recognized was Taft High School junior Jerry Chien – the only student from San Patricio County to earn the distinction in 2025.

According to a news release from the SBOE, the annual distinctions honor Texas public school students who demonstrate “exceptional character, kindness and service to others.” Students earning the honor have engaged in service, such as supporting students with disabilities and volunteering at community supply drives, to mentoring younger students and launching nonprofits focused on mental wellness according to the SBOE…
