West Des Moines to move 2026 July Fourth fireworks display amid animal welfare concerns from local shelter

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — West Des Moines will move its 2026 Fourth of July fireworks display to Jordan Creek Town Center, the city said in a release.

The decision comes as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, and city leaders received complaints regarding the proximity of the fireworks display to a local animal shelter.

For several years, West Des Moines launched July Fourth fireworks at Raccoon River Park. That changed in 2020, when the city moved the display to the City Campus nearby the West Des Moines Public Library and City Hall, due to “overcrowding and social distancing,” West Des Moines Mayor Russ Trimble said in the release…
