Irving ISD to Implement New State-Mandated Electronic Device Policy Starting August 13

IRVING, TX – In compliance with the recently passed House Bill 1481, signed into law by Governor Abbott, Irving Independent School District (IISD) will implement a new electronic device policy prohibiting student use of personal electronic devices during the school day, effective August 13.

House Bill 1481 mandates that all public school districts adopt policies to restrict personal electronic device use during instructional hours. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Cell phones
  • Smartwatches (including fitness trackers with texting or calling features)
  • Bluetooth earbuds or headphones (including AirPods)
  • Tablets and personal laptops (including iPads and gaming devices)

To adhere to the new law and foster a learning-focused environment, Irving ISD will introduce the following procedures starting the first day of school, August 13:

  • Middle & High School Students will be required to use Yondr pouches to secure their devices. Yondr pouches are secure, locking pouches designed to temporarily store mobile devices in phone-free environments.
  • Elementary Students will be required to store their powered-off devices in their backpacks.
