TriMet to reduce services, workforce amid $300 million budget gap

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — TriMet will begin reducing its services this fall as it faces a $300 million budget gap.

The public transportation agency servicing the greater Portland metro area said the service reduction is the result of “the Oregon Legislature’s failure” to pass a transportation bill.

The reduction in transportation services is expected to ramp up for the next couple of years, as well as a reduction in workforce — including layoffs — if the funding is not secured, officials said.

“It is a sad day for TriMet,” said TriMet General Manager Sam Desue Jr. He added that the agency is making these service cuts now to avoid “sudden, catastrophic cuts in the future” by way of falling off “a fiscal cliff in 2030.”…
