Birmingham man sentenced to over 3 decades in prison for gun, drug crimes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A Birmingham man was sentenced to 36 years in prison after he was convicted of gun and drug charges in February, according to U.S. Attorney Prim Escalona on Wednesday.

A jury convicted Frederick Leonard Temple Jr., 35, of possession of a machine gun, two counts of distribution of fentanyl, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, and possession of a machine gun in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime. U.S. District Court Judge Madeline Haikala handed the sentence.

Temple distributed fentanyl twice, according to evidence presented at trial. Shelby County Drug Enforcement Task Force members and Birmingham police officers executed a search warrant at Temple’s residence on January 26, 2022. Officers discovered drugs and firearms in a rear bedroom where an infant was found.
