‘Working to Live’: Renters in Kalamazoo feel the weight of rising housing costs

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Working full-time is no longer a guarantee of affording rent in Michigan, and thousands of residents are feeling the pressure.

Statewide, the average renter would need to earn $24.46 per hour to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment; nearly double Michigan’s minimum wage of $12.48.

For a one-bedroom unit, renters need to make at least $19.66 an hour, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s 2025 Out of Reach report…
