Napa’s commute collapses as remote work and rising costs take over, study finds

Napa County’s daily flow of commuters is thinning out. Fewer workers are driving in. Fewer residents are heading out. And with remote work on the rise, more locals are staying put.

A new transportation study reveals a shift in how people travel to, from and within Napa — a reflection of deeper changes in the county’s population, workforce and affordability. Though the number of cars on the road hasn’t dropped, who’s behind the wheel — and why — has changed.

The 2025 Napa Valley Travel Behavior Study, commissioned by the Napa Valley Transportation Authority, shows a 12% decline in inter-county trips compared to previous years. In other words, there are fewer people crossing Napa’s borders to get to work, whether they live here or not.
