After floods, FBI El Paso warning of potential charity scams lurking online

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — In lieu of recent disasters in our area, and those across New Mexico and Central Texas, FBI El Paso is warning the public about potential charity fraud.

Charity fraud is when scammers set up fake charities or donation sites to take advantage of your kindness. The FBI says while these scams can occur at any time, they are especially prevalent after damaging events like hurricanes, flash floods, and forest fires. Scammers compete with legitimate charities to divert donations away from those who need it most, and back to the fake charity’s creator.
