Prosecutor, lawmaker speak on competency laws after murder case dropped for Southern Colorado deadly hit-and-run suspect

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Concern is growing with Colorado’s laws governing competency when it comes to criminal cases, after a Southern Colorado man is set to walk free after being accused of a deadly 2024 hit-and-run.

In November of 2024, Joel Lang was charged with the murder of 47-year-old Kristy Kerst in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant in Monument.

The DA said Lang hit Kerst’s vehicle, and when Kerst exited her vehicle to check for damage, Lang hit Kerst and dragged her hundreds of feet while driving away…
