We’ve long thought that the city of Burlington’s infatuation with pickleball, and the city council’s commitment to spend millions of tax dollars on additional pickleball courts, was badly misplaced.
Now that the 17-court pickleball Taj Mahal near City Park has been completed (at a cost of about $4 million), it seems few people are showing up to play.
Where is all the demand we kept hearing about? Oh, it was so urgent, council members were told, that they just had to rush to build the huge court complex, which finally opened after months of delay in May. The council also agreed to pay $150,000 a year for a company to “run” the pickleball endeavor…
