Three MDOC officers arrested for smuggling contraband

RANKIN COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Officials with the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced three correctional officers were arrested this week for alleged attempts to smuggle contraband for inmates into the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) in Rankin County.

Investigators said they seized contraband recovered during searches of the officers’ work bags. The contraband included cellphones, food, alcohol and controlled substances. MDOC officials said the three corporals were arrested, and they were identified as Sherry McCollum, Kiarra Michael and Theresa Hasty.

McCollum, 49, of Jackson, was charged with introduction of contraband, two counts of introduction of a controlled substance and two counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute – all into a correctional facility. She had worked for MDOC since February 2023.

Investigators said McCollum was arrested on July 20 after a search of her belongings revealed four cell phones, 232 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 76 grams of marijuana. Investigators said they also confiscated food in a container including a steak and items resembling sausages wrapped in tape.

Michael, 33, of Jackson, was charged under the general prohibitions statute and conspiracy. Michael was also arrested on July 20 after officials said a search of her belongings revealed 10 cellphones and a wall charger. Michael was released on bond. She had worked for MDOC since July 2023…
