Fort Bend County Judge KP George introduced an agenda item to hire an outside law firm to advise commissioners, instead of the county attorney, who is an elected official.
A divided Fort Bend County Commissioners Court voted Tuesday to approve several appointees to its redistricting committee and clashed over the role of the county attorney, after Judge KP George proposed that the county hire outside legal counsel to advise the commissioners court in her place.
Commissioners began looking at the county’s voter map after Republican State Rep. Matt Morgan sent a letter saying that Fort Bend’s voter precincts did not meet the population requirements under state law.
Since then, Republican commissioners have claimed that the county’s map in 2021 was illegally based on race. They’ve pushed for the county to redistrict, instead of only fixing the voter precincts…
