Man accused of 4-alarm Portland apartment fire faces additional charges for attempted murder, bias crime

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man accused of intentionally setting fire to a Portland apartment complex earlier this month is now facing additional charges for the 4-alarm blaze.

Shaun Szwarz, a 40-year-old resident of the Vandalay Arms Apartments near Northeast 104th Avenue and East Burnside Street – allegedly set fire to the complex the morning of July 11.

Szwarz was arrested that day and booked on 18 charges: six counts of arson, six counts of reckless endangerment and six counts of criminal mischief.

However, Portland Fire & Rescue Senior Investigator Jason Andersen told KOIN 6 News on Wednesday, “Since that time, we have been continuing our follow-up investigation in coordination with the (Multnomah District Attorney’s Office) gathering additional evidence related to this investigation,” noting, as a result of the investigation, the District Attorney’s Office added more charges to the case against Szwarz…
