Repairs connect historic bridge to neighborhoods near Swinney Park

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A million-dollar project was completed Thursday that connects Swinney Park to the surrounding neighborhoods via one of the longest-standing pedestrian bridges in the city.

The Mechanic Street Bridge connects to the road of its namesake, which leads to the neighborhoods of Nebraska, Hamilton and North Highlands. Built in 1898, the bridge spans 180 feet and crosses the St. Marys River.

Time and the elements have taken their toll on the bridge, making its restoration a pressing priority, according to a press release. City Council approved the funding in May 2024. The total cost — pulled from Parks Cumulative Capital Funds — was $1,277,309.76.

“The restoration exceeded our expectations,” said Parks Director Steve McDaniel. “Of the 12 bridges we maintain, none—other than the Wells Street Bridge—carries the same level of historic significance. Neighbors have long asked for this repair, and this phase one project restores an essential link between both sides of the river.”…
