Post office renamed to honor Marine killed in helicopter crash

PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Nearly a year and a half after his death, the family of U.S. Marine Capt. Miguel Nava says the word that remains on their mind is legacy.

“Miguel always had a willingness to help others,” Bryan Marks, Nava’s uncle, explained. “He wanted others to be bigger than themselves. He wanted others to strive for what Miguel did: work hard, be something bigger than yourself.”

‘Hero, leader’: Hundreds honor fallen Marine from Comstock Park

Lawmakers, community leaders, friends and family congregated in Comstock Park Friday for a ceremony renaming the local post office in his honor — a solemn but inspiring moment as they remembered his life.

Nava grew up in Comstock Park and was voted most likely to succeed before graduating high school in 2013. After his acceptance into the U.S. Naval Academy, Nava earned his pilot’s wings and was commissioned by the Marine Corps to fly helicopters.

Nava and four other Marines died in February 2024 during a training flight when the helicopter they were in crashed near San Diego in poor weather. At age 28, Nava left behind a wife, a young son and a legacy built on purpose…
