Sighs of relief, cries of remembrance, and solemn silence marked the groundbreaking today of a major road safety project in Oakland. Residents and city officials gathered at Lakeshore Avenue and E. 18th Street, near the location where four-year-old Maia Correia was killed two years ago while riding on a bicycle with her father.
A new protected bike lane will take at least a year to complete, but the city said it will vastly improve safety.
Starting this summer, the transportation department and its contractors will build a separated two-way bikeway between El Embarcadero Avenue and E. 18th Street, removing two driving lanes, adding pedestrian bulbouts and refuge islands, and repaving the whole street…
