Rancho Cordova Animal Services Warns Pet Owners About the Hidden Dangers of Foxtails in Tall Grasses

If you think the only plants that pose a threat to your furry friend are those of the toxic variety, think again. The Animal Services Assistance Program is reminding pet owners about a more insidious, yet common danger lurking in the tall grasses of Rancho Cordova: foxtails. These pesky grass awns are notorious for embedding themselves in man’s best friend, leading to painful and potentially serious health issues. According to a published notice by the City of Rancho Cordova, the seeds can easily puncture skin, or worse, become stuck internally.

Notably, with over 25 species of grass producing foxtails, avoiding them might seem like a herculean task, but experts suggest certain precautions. The Accommodation Services Assistance Program emphasizes prevention by advocating for pet owners to “keep your grass cut short and avoid walking or playing with your dog in areas with tall, weedy grass.” Also, don’t forget to regularly to thoroughly groom your dog – this means inspecting their paw pads daily, brushing weekly, and regular baths, as per the City of Rancho Cordova.

These invasive seeds are not only a nuisance but, at times, require surgical intervention once they’ve lodged themselves in between toes, or worse, in noses, ears, or intestines. As mentioned by the City of Rancho Cordova, the program further urges pet owners to keep an eye out for symptoms like “excessive licking between the toes, sneezing or repeated swallowing, and head shaking and ear scratching,” which could signal a foxtail issue.
