Fishing Report: Chinook egg takes complete circle of life at sport fish hatchery

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Each summer, spawning adult Chinook salmon return to the very same waters they were released from years prior. And each summer, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game collect portions of these kings in an effort to collect eggs and milt, creating new life as theirs comes to an end.

“Once they add fresh water, fertilization occurs almost instantaneously,” Alaska Department of Fish and Game statewide communications coordinator Ryan Ragan said.

“Eventually, the eggs will be transferred into an incubation tray. At some point when the fish are ready to swim – they have their fully developed fins and mouth parts – then they will get transferred into our larger tanks on the floor.”…
