City officials give update after one year of ‘hands-free’ ordinance

HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) — No phone call or text message is worth your life or the lives of others.

This is why the City of Huntsville put the ‘hands-free’ ordinance into effect.

“The hands free is a primary offense, so if a police officer sees you with a phone in your hand, he can pull you over,” said City Council President David Little.

The law took effect in January of 2024 with a 6-month grace period of warnings. Full enforcement started last July. Now, one year later, city officials are discussing its progress and what lies ahead…
