Working in the heat: Frequent breaks, staying hydrated helps fieldworkers stay safe

ALAIEDON TOWNSHIP — Farming is not for the faint of heart in the 90-plus degree weather that stifled mid-Michigan on Thursday, July 24.

“I’ve already had four Popsicles this morning,” doctoral student Noah Poisson said as he and others weeded the shadeless organic broccoli fields on the campus of Michigan State University. “What we’re doing out here isn’t worth the risk of heat stroke.”
